As some of you may know I’ve been in Egypt for the past 2 weeks. Sneaky I know. Just when you think I’m at home making macaroni and cheese.

There really is no need to to state how amazing it was, so I thought that while I get myself straightened out and back in this timezone I would post a few pictures that for me highlight our trip.

Cairo

Cairo – Helwan metropolitan area population approximately 17.5 million. City as far as the eye can see, intense but not as surreal as those two things popping out of the horizon. Seriously, I could have spent my entire trip staring at this view.

Just when you think there’s nothing more surreal than that, there’s this

oh and this

Food was probably the only slightly disappointing part. Slightly only because I think that for the first time in my life it wasn’t the center of all that I think about. I guess I finally discovered what it takes to get food off my brain, if only temporarily.

This is Kushari aka your mothers worst left over dish. If you want guaranteed intestinal pain and a high probability of returning from your trip 20 pounds lighter this is definitely for you. Consisting of rice, macaroni, lentils, garlic, fried onions (the best part) and topped with tomato sauce and vinegar, Kushari is certainly unique and definitely not risk free. If you’re lucky you may receive this garnished with 2 or 3 large grey mystery meat meatballs, if you’re lucky. Despite how I’m making it sound, Kushari doesn’t actually taste that bad, it’s more about how it makes you feel afterwords, for like 2 weeks.

The best thing I could find to eat in Egypt was the Greek salad and pita bread when it was fresh. I pretty much ate this everyday for every meal.

The tea was pretty good, especially the mint, hibiscus and Bedouin tea and especially when accompanied by apple shisha.

Two weeks was definitely not enough time, but I will be back… insallah.
